When Is Tet 2026?

Tet in 2026 — the Vietnamese Lunar New Year 2026 — officially begins on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, with celebrations typically starting one or two weeks before and continuing through the week after. For many Vietnamese-Australians, this period is about community, tradition, and making sure family back home feels supported and connected.

What People Do Before and During Tet

Activities before Tet

Before Tet arrives, many households follow long-held customs that signal respect for the past year and hope for the year ahead:

  • Cleaning and decorating the house – Sweeping out dust and cleaning the house are classic Tet traditions to get rid of bad luck and make space for good fortune for the coming year. Many families also refresh their living space with fresh flowers, kumquat trees, and bright red décor to set the vibe for the year ahead.
  • Shopping for new clothes – Buying new clothes and getting a new haircut are always a must-do in Vietnamese people’s checklist, in the belief that the new, good-looking appearance can attract positivity and abundance in the new year.
  • Settling all tasks and debts – Many believe that clearing all pending tasks and debts is essential to release them from obligations or financial burdens in the previous year to start fresh.
  • Preparing traditional foods – Together, families make traditional dishes to welcome the new year, such as bánh chưng, or bánh tét (sticky rice cake), thịt kho trứng (braised pork with eggs), bánh mứt (Tet candied fruits). This is a bonding activity to gather family members together and prepare meaningful gifts for relatives and friends.

Activities during Tet

Giving lì xì (red envelopes) and new year wishes is the most anticipated tradition on the first day of the Lunar New Year, when Vietnamese visit their loved ones to give out lucky money in red envelopes to wish others abundance, happiness and health.

Thus, sending money to Vietnam before Tet is more than a financial transaction; it’s a gesture of care and support to your family and friends to cover festivity expenses and give them lì xì with good luck and blessings. Understanding the timing and cultural importance of Tet helps you ensure your money reaches home right when it’s needed most.

But the closer you get to Tet, the more hustle everything becomes. That’s exactly why planning ahead — and choosing a reliable online service — makes all the difference when sending money to Vietnam before Lunar New Year 2026.

How long does it take to send and deliver money to Vietnam?

The delivery timeframe depends on two main factors: the payment method in Australia (from the sender) and the payout method in Vietnam (to the receiver).

Payment methods in Australia

We will begin to process your money transfer once we fully receive the payment for your transaction:

  • For in-store payments by cash and EFTPOS: As we receive your funds on the spot, we will start to process your transaction instantly.
  • For online payments by bank transfer/PayID/online credit or debit card: We will begin to process your transaction when we receive your payment.
  • Please note:
    • If you pay by bank transfer or PayID, your bank may hold your payment for about 24 hours (first payment to a new Payee) before transferring it to our account
    • You can expect payments by credit/debit card to go through immediately. Kindly note that there will be a small 1.2% surcharge for payments by credit/debit card.

Payout methods in Vietnam

Your transaction processing time will vary depending on the payout method to your receiver in Vietnam.

  • For bank transfer:
    • Under 500 million VND: If the receiver’s account is in the real-time bank network, it usually takes 30 minutes to process.
    • From 500 million VND or over: The bank account is credited within 1 to 2 business days.
  • For home delivery:
    • Inner-city of Ho Chi Minh and most of the other major cities: Same-day delivery*
    • Others: The funds could be delivered the next day (or next business day for some rural areas)*
    • *Please contact us to check if your location supports same-day delivery via our hotline at 02 9728 7928.
  • For e-wallet: The receiver’s e-wallet account will receive the funds within an hour after the transaction is processed.
  • For self-pick-up: The receiver can collect the funds within 1 to 2 business hours
    • Inner-city of Ho Chi Minh: Pick-up available all week
    • Others: Pick-up available during working days only (Monday to Friday)

Please note: Except for bank transfers under 500 million VND to accounts in the real-time bank network, which is not affected by Tet’s cut-off time, other payout methods are bound to a cut-off date if you want to ensure your funds are delivered before Tet. Please dial our hotline at 02 9728 7928 so we can check on your case.

Celebrate Tet with a Digital Lucky Red Envelope

At Hai Ha Money Transfer, we believe that the spirit of the red envelope should extend to everyone. In Vietnamese culture, the beauty of the red envelope is the kindness and the "lộc" (luck) it brings. To celebrate Tet 2026, we are introducing a modern version of this ancient custom via the "Lì Xì Như Ý - Mở Lộc Đón Xuân” reward campaign for our online customers (T&Cs apply).

How the Digital Red Envelope works

Receiving your lì xì in our 2026 New Year Reward campaign is designed to be as effortless as the online money transfer itself. Here is your three-step guide to claiming your luck.

Step 1: Submit an Online Transfer

Between 09/02/2026 and 16/02/2026, log in to your account via Hai Ha Money Transfer’s website or mobile app (iOS, Android) and create a money transfer transaction to Vietnam.

Step 2: Click and open your Digital Red Envelope

After submitting your transaction, you will see a screen to claim your lucky red envelope. Click to open a red envelope and reveal your voucher. Each customer will receive only one red envelope during the Campaign Period.

Step 3: Redeem your Reward

The reward can be redeemed for one future online money transfer transaction upon your selection. Please choose “Select a discount” to apply your voucher at the Payment step of the transaction to which you would like to redeem the voucher.

The voucher will expire after 90 days from the date of issue. You can check the expiry date and voucher details by logging into the customer’s online account.
